Climate Activists Halt Coal Plant and Mine in UK

October 26th, 2009

This morning, activists have climbed a coal power station chimney in Oxfordshire and blocked a coal mine in  Derbyshire in protests over climate change.

A group bicycled around and forced their way into Didcot Power Station, run by N-Power, a subsidiary of German utility group RWE, at about 5:30am today.  Nine climbed the steps of one of the chimneys; they have supplies to stay there for a long time, during which the power plant will be unable to operate. A further 13 were are on the coal conveyor belt.

In Shipley, members of Earth First! entered UK Coal’s opencast coal mine near Shipley at 9.30am, occupying six vehicles there. They say they intend to stay as long as possible in a bid to stop new coal mines and power stations in the UK.

All this comes after more 1,000 people demonstrated at Ratcliffe-on-Soar‘s power station for the Great Climate Swoop last weekend. 56 activists were arrested.

Liz Cartmel, a protester at Shipley says: “We recognise the important role coal mining has played in the local economy in the past, but at a time where our future survival hangs in the balance we need to work towards a future without climate destroying coal. Our only way out of the climate crisis is to reduce consumption and to use renewable energies such as wind and solar.”

Climate Camp Australia Shuts Down Dendrobium Coal Mine

October 11, 7:05am
. Four people from Climate Camp 2009 scaled and locked themselves onto the coal conveyor belt at the Dendrobium coal mine near Helensburgh, NSW. Spokesperson for the group Aimee Bull-McMahon said “We have shut down the conveyor from this underground polluter as part of the Climate Camp 09 three days of action. The Dendrobium coal mine, owned by Illawarra Coal, has been disastrous for the surrounding water ways that the local community relies on for drinking water.”

“The EPA has found that the mines underground coal activities have had massive negative impact on the Wongawilly Creek and numerous surrounding swamps that have been drained from the operations of this
mine. By taking peaceful direct action at this heavy polluter, and destroyer of water ways, we are making it clear to our state and federal government that the community wants a transition away from coal towards a future of water security and renewable energy, ” concluded Ms Bull-McMahon.

Climate Camp Australia concluded on October 11 with a mass peaceful direct action in beginning at the Rex Jackson Park in Helensburgh at 11am to the site of the Metropolitan Collieries.

Shut Coal Down in Copenhagen ahead of COP15

September 27th, 2009

shutitdown

Shortly after G20 protesters were attacked by police at the University of Pittsburgh, on September 26 about 1,500 people took direct action to shut down one of Copenhagen’s coal fire power plants. The SHUT IT DOWN action plan had been openly announced several months earlier and Danish police had been gearing up for massive use of force to trial new anti-protest laws. Around 100 protesters managed to get inside the power plant.  Although at that point the plant should have been shut down due to safety regulations,  it was kept running.

Around 100 people have been arrested. One person so far has been charged. The action was widely and positively covered in Danish news. The  protesters regard this act of mass civil disobience for climate justice an encouraging success  and a positive trial run for the actions surrounding the COP 15 climate conference in December in Copenhagen (On Dec 16, RECLAIM POWER!).
